Nipper Mitts

modeled mitts

One set US 9 double point needles.
One skein Meunch Naturewoole (color#103 Flamme).
Small amount of contrasting yarn (I used smooth mercerised cotton so it wouldn't leave bits behind.)

Gauge: 16 sts x 20 rows = 4 inch square

This pattern makes Mittens 4" around the wrist, 3.5" around the fingers, and just under 8" long. Feel free to add stitches or rows for larger mittens. I had quite a bit of yarn left over, so you can probably get regular lady's sized mitts out of one skein. Men's or larger lady's sized mitts will probably edge into 2 skeins.

Cast on 30 sts.
Join edges to form circle, being sure not to twist stitches.
Work in K1, P1 Rib for 6 rows.
Switch to Stockinette Stitch.
    Knit for 12 rows.

Right Mitten:
Thumb Row: With contrasting yarn, knit first 4 sts on needle 1. Turn. Knit 4 sts once again. Turn. Bind off those 4 sts and leave off needle. With main yarn knit the rest of the sts on needle 1, being sure to join sts of needles 1 and 4 in a circle.
Continue in Stockinette Stitch for 18 rows.

Begin end shaping:
Row 1: Knit to last 3 sts of needle 2, K2tog, K1. Needle 3: K1, K2tog, knit to end of row.
    Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: Same as Row 1.
    Row 4: Knit.
Row 5: *K2tog* repeat to end.
    Row 6: Knit.
    Row 7: *K2tog* repeat to end, K1.

Pull end through remaining stitches and tie off.

Left Mitten:
Thumb Row: Knit until last 4 stitches of needle 4, switch to contrasting yarn, K4. Turn. Knit those 4 stitches again. Turn. Bind off. Continue with main color yarn.
Continue in Stockinette Stitch for 18 rows.

End Shaping as for Right Mitten.

Unravel contrasting color yarn from thumb stitches and move the 4 "live"stiches onto needle 1. With Main color yarn, knit those 4 sts. Make one stitch. Pick up & knit 4 stiches from glove side of mitt. Make one stitch. Evenly distribute these 10 sts on your needles, they make up your thumb stitches.
    Knit 8 rows

Decreasing row: *K2tog* repeat to end.
Thread yarn through remaining sts and tie off.

Weave in ends.
